Sandy Mitchell «Death or Glory»
'I'll get you there,' Kolfax said, and climbed aboard the truck, next to the driver.
Hascom watched him go, with a mildly dubious expression. 'Are you sure you wouldn't rather have him with you, sir? I'd have thought your place was at the head of the convoy.'
I shook my head. 'I'd rather hang back a little, so we can help out if anyone gets into trouble,' I told him. Besides, if the tracks were mined, I'd rather not be the one to find out.
Hascom nodded, taking the feeble excuse at face value. 'As you wish, sir.' He saluted smartly. 'We won't let you down, I can promise you that.' As he swung himself aboard the ramshackle vehicle, his ragtag unit cheered as though they were off on a sector wakes1 rather than about to enter combat, and it belatedly occurred to me that they thought it was an honour to be taking point. Well, good for them, if they were keeping me out of the line of fire they might as well feel good about it.
'Comms check,' I said, returning to my own vehicle, and activating the tiny transceiver in my ear as I scrambled aboard. There Jurgen, Tayber, Grenbow, Tarvil and Hascom sounded off one by one. It was getting warmer, and I folded the heavy cloth into a seemed a lot more room now the bulk of our supplies had been distributed around the convoy, and I shrugged off my greatcoat as makeshift cushion on top of one of the boxes of bolter ammo. I waited a moment, listening to the hiss of static as I re-buckled my weapon belt and sat down, wedging myself into a corner as comfortably as I could. 'Kolfax, can you hear me?'
'Yep.' The artisan's voice was as curt as ever. 'Took me a minute to figure out how you work this thing.'
'Fine.' I hid my irritation easily. 'If everyone's ready then, we might as well go.'
The roar of our engines starting up shattered the silence. The noise building to a series of peaks as each badly tuned vehicle retched in volume, the ever-present echoes from the sand dunes surrounding us making things ten times worse. After what seemed like an into life one after the other. Every time I thought the racket couldn't possibly become any louder or more intolerable it redoubled eternity, the truck in front of us lurched into motion. Then, with a jerk, which seemed specifically designed to underline the futility of my coat folding efforts, Jurgen kicked our own transport into gear. There was no more time to wonder if I'd made the right decision. For better or worse we were committed, rolling towards the destiny which has continued to shape the course of my life ever since.
